Counselling with Rebecca

Coming into a counselling space is a brave decision but one that will benefit you for life. You may be considering counselling because you are at a point where you don’t want to continue in the way that you are living right now.

You are ready for something to change but not quite sure how to get there.

Within counselling this is something that we explore together. To untangle what binds you and help you on the path to freedom.

My Therapeutic Approach

Within my counselling practice, I specialise in working with clients who have experienced trauma. Trauma can impact our physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. Through a trauma based approach, we work together to help you move forward from what has happened, to a place of empowerment.

Trauma is not so much what has happened to you, but how your body has responded to events. You may be experiencing anxiety or low mood. Maybe you are easy to anger or find it hard to maintain relationships. These can all be signs of a trauma response.

Trauma doesn’t just sit in our mental health but impacts our physical health. If you have experience or are experiencing insomnia, chronic health conditions, fatigue, migraines or digestive issues exploring through a trauma lens can help in your recovery. The body remembers, and our bodies are a big clue to what is going on in our mind.

So how do we work together?

Firstly, we work at your pace. There is no time limit, no deadlines. You set the agenda. Initially we work together to help you feel safe and comfortable. I take what is known as a ‘bottom up’ approach to trauma. Meaning that we start with the body first. Through working in a somatic way, we become aware of what the body is holding and help you feel stable and

secure.

Secondly, we work with integrating what has happened to you. Understanding your past when you are in a safe and secure place to explore your experiences in an empathic and contained way.

And finally, we explore ways of moving forward. How do you want your future to look like. It’s not about being ‘free’ from trauma. We can’t change what has happened to you. More we look at how you can thrive despite what has happened. This is not always a linear process. Sometimes we take one step forward and few steps back. And this is ok, life isn’t always one steady path. We explore what is going to help you on this path too - working in a creative way, through play, through nature - we find what therapeutic tools fit you. This is not a one size fits all approach! However we approach this, I always work in a non-judgemental and empathic way. I provide a space where we can safely explore your experiences. You will be listened to, you will be heard, you will be believed.

My background and qualifications

Throughout my career I have always worked with people in helping professions. I began my

career as an advocate, working with young people in care, ensuring they were listened to,

and their rights respected.

I then moved into working in education and supporting teenagers at risk of being excluded.

This work exposed me first hand to how poor mental health was having a huge impact on

people’s lives. Wanting to do something to help, I trained as a mindfulness teacher and

started my journey to train as an integrative counsellor.

Years down the line, I’ve trained as a child and teen mindfulness teacher, trained in MBCT(Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy) and MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction).

I’ve completed my Diploma in Counselling and specialised in working with trauma. I’ve completed further training in sound therapy, a variety of trauma approaches and creative counselling.

As well as counselling, I host group and 1:1 sessions offering relaxation and self-care. Hosting these events and retreats is an important part of my work. I’m passionate about creating spaces where people can focus on their own wellness.

I am fully insured and have a DBS check in place. I am a member of the BACP and follow their ethical guidelines, ensuring I work in a safe and professional manner.
